Santiam Pass Ski Patrol Ski Test

Before any ski patrol training can begin, the ski patrol candidate must take a ski test. After successfully passing the test, the candidate may enroll in the OEC first aid course and the on-the-hill candidate training program.

How the test is administered

You must register to take the ski test prior to the appointed date/time. Next you will meet with the other test takers at a specified place. You will then travel to the top of the mountain with 3 or 4 locally registered ski patrollers. Each patroller will independently grade you. Each skill section will have a weight value which will be applied to the score. After the test, the ski patrollers will sum your scores. The test scores are pass or fail. Persons who fail the ski test are eligible to retake the ski test as long as they sign up for any scheduled test time with space available.

The Ski Patrol is looking for strong fundamentals and the ability to ski with confidence in the following areas:
 
Edge Control
        Traversing without slipping
Crud skiing ability
       Un-groomed, off packed
Quick stops
           (Left/Right)
Short-swing turns
Snow plow turns
            (Left/Right)
General ski technique
